The owners of this property in Halifax first purchased from Express Bi-Folding Doors back in 2007. Fast forward nearly two decades and two children later and after deliberating whether to move or stay, they decided to renovate and extend it in the least stressful way possible.
It was these decisions that led them to revisit our showroom in Leeds, where the full range of products on display and influence of their two children led them to embrace the concept of outdoor living with two sets of bi-folding doors, a solar powered awning and a bioclimatic pergola to sit at the foot of their garden as the alternative to undertaking an expensive and disruptive house extension.
We replaced all the existing windows as the house was being re-rendered and installed two new sets of bi-folding doors across the rear. The family home very much had a focus on indoor, outdoor living and we installed a range of products to enhance the outdoor space as well as the interiors.
The rear elevation is dominated by two sets of three panel bi-folding doors. One set forms the backdrop to a games room and leads out onto a raised patio complete with a hot tub. The second set completes the kitchen area, sat in-between the breakfast and an outdoor dining set up.
Bi-folding doors are perfect for these social parts of the home, the floor to ceiling glass ensures that the interiors are light and bright, there is an everyday door that allows for quick access inside and out, and the real benefit is that the doors can effortlessly be swept aside. Connecting home and garden in seconds and bring real flexibility to either space.
As large format glazing has become increasingly popular in the design of our homes along with our summers getting longer and hotter, solar shading can be just as important as the products themselves.
As both bi-folding doors are sat across the rear elevation, solar reflective glass was used along with two innovative solar shading solutions.
Sitting above the kitchen bi-folding door is a beautiful contemporary looking awning. What better solution for a product that is used when the sun is at its hottest, than to use that very sun as the power source for the products operation?
One of the main benefits of the solar awning is that there is no hard wiring required and shading protection up to six metres wide and four metres out can be achieved with 2 solar panels and one battery unit.
This awning can offer shade and protection while the family are eating outside, and whether the homeowners are in or out, the awning can be left out on hot days to prevent any solar heat gain coming through the glass.
The cassette of the awning has been powered coated to the same RAL colour to match the bi-folding doors, and they opted for a black fabric to match in with the colour scheme.
Our solar powered awnings are available nationwide and you can view them in our Leeds and Milton Keynes showrooms.
The bi-folding doors are glazing with solar powered integral blinds also. The blinds have a small solar panel on the outside, and a battery control unit on the inside, plus a remote control.
Integral blinds are the perfect complement to bi-folding doors as they offer privacy, light control and can reduce the heat coming in through the glass. They also never need cleaning and literally just fold away with the doors when they’re open.
We offer two types of manual operated blinds, plus hard-wired electric blinds, all of which can be viewed in any of our showrooms.
Because the family wanted to create another social space for themselves, they opted for a large 6m x 4m bioclimatic structure with an opening louvre roof from our sister company Exterior Spaces from Express.
Due to the location of the pergola the homeowners decided that they didn’t need access from the rear of the space so screened this off with our fixed glazing and used frameless sliding doors across the remaining three elevations of the structure.
The impressive space is complete with heaters and LED lighting and can be used and enjoyed year-round. The fantastic outdoor products from Exterior Spaces are available across Yorkshire and the Northwest and you can explore the many bespoke options and solutions inside and outside our flagship Leeds showroom.
The finished results are terrific and exactly as the homeowners intended, a flexible space that can be enjoyed throughout the year whether it’s the cooler dark evenings or those long summer days.
The luxury pergola, and outdoor patio area complete with hot tub and dining area may be positioned outside but it looks and feels very much a key part of this family home, all of which can be closed off and separated from the house or instantly feel connected, yet protected thanks to our bi-folding doors, awnings and the bioclimatic technology within the pergola.
The homeowner Jennifer Hanson sums it up perfectly
‘we love every aspect of it, it looks even better at night as the pergola lights up and so does the awning. The awning is such a great product, it looks great when its closed but this summer, we’ve had it out the whole time and it’s made such a difference. The kids absolutely love all of it, in the summer it feels like they’re never in the house. We loved our bi-folding doors when we got them all those years ago, but now we’ve renovated the whole space just feels complete, the garden and the patio just feel like a really valued part of the house’.
