Background
Like many people dream of doing, these homeowners decided to find a plot of land to build their brand-new forever home. Nestled within the beautiful Usk Valley to the south of the Black Mountains in South-East Wales they found the perfect plot which allowed them to start the journey towards building their dream home.
Plans were drawn up for the luxury new dwelling with an outward design sympathetic of the stunning surroundings by utilising traditional stonework to satisfy any planning concerns but with the contemporary addition of panoramic glazing throughout. The homeowners wanted to use one supplier for all the glazing required so visited the Grand Designs Live exhibition in Birmingham which is where they first fell in love with the bespoke products from Express. As the sales consultation progressed along with discussion around the architects plans, the homeowners visited our Weybridge showroom to decide on their choice of sliding door system for their property, as well as the styling of the feature front door and all the finer details that need to be discussed and finalised to ensure that any new house feels like a home. Plans discussed and key decisions made led to the next stage of the process. A full site survey then took place where all the bespoke glazing that would play such a key role in the execution of this property was finalised and agreed.
What we delivered
We manufactured and installed all the large format glazing throughout the property from front to back. Every elevation is dominated by our products which complement the homes stunning exteriors, but it is inside where the thin sightlines of our door and window products plays a crucial role in allowing the homeowners to enjoy the fantastic views in each and every room in the house.
Slim framed aluminium windows
The properties exterior fabric has been built from random stone with window openings in-between stone lintels and stone cills, so very much a traditional looking building. The aluminium window frames sit perfectly within the stone-built openings. The full-face widths of the window profiles are on show so slim sightlines were crucial to add a contemporary twist to the building’s exterior. Flush sash casement windows do just that creating a beautiful and modern contrast to the traditional stonework.
Inside, the slim sightlines are just as important with the windows complimenting the open-plan interiors and ensuring a consistent and clean aesthetic throughout the home.
Glazed entrance atrium
The entrance to any house can really set the tone for what awaits inside and here guests are immediately impressed by the grand entrance atrium that welcomes visitors into this home. The double storey glazed curtain-walling screen spans from the floor up to the roof eaves, an imposing wall of glass that houses a gorgeous front door.
The entrance door is the Caverro design from our Premium range, a flush double bonded front door with three glazed inserts and steel decorative inlays. Our Premium entrance doors are beautiful and when combined with curtain-walling to create an entrance atrium the results are absolutely stunning. Internally, the aesthetics are just as impressive, a feature wall of glazing that looks bald, strong and secure whilst flooding both floors with natural light and providing a modern framework to the magnificent views outside.
Master bedroom feature window
The master bedroom boasts a huge panoramic window that acts as a design feature both inside and outside of the property. The Northwest elevation of the property faces onto the social area of the garden and like the home frontage, boasts a huge wall of glass which spans both floors.
In the bedroom a triple track sliding door with 20mm sightlines is fixed closed to create three huge panes of glass that line through with the same sliding door system used downstairs. This has created a huge picture window with just two vertical pieces of 20mm wide aluminium profiles separating the three pieces of glass. A shaped gable window sits above the lintel, again with slim-line transoms that line through with the window and sliding doors below to create a hugely impressive picture window that allows the homeowners to drink in some of the most beautiful views in the UK.
Slim sightline sliding doors
Such are the views surrounding this property it would be criminal to not incorporate them into the homes design which is why slim sightline sliding doors have been utilised to retain as much of the views as possible. Two large twin track sliding doors sit across the rear elevation and a triple track sliding door dominates the Northwest elevation with the slender 20mm sightlines allowing natural light and the stunning views to enhance the open plan interior space.
All the ground floor patio doors slide open to create a seamless transition out onto the external patio area which sits flush at the same level as the internal floor level, but it is when the patio doors are closed when the benefits can be seen. Floor to ceiling glass offering unobstructed views out to the beautiful mountains and valleys of the Welsh countryside.

A superb barn conversion
The homeowners are absolutely thrilled with their completed project. The interior space is abundant with natural light and the ground floor is an open plan setting that benefits from the countryside acting as the natural backdrop wherever you look. The entrance atrium and glazed Northwest elevation add architectural features to the inside and outside of the home and the combination of slim framed aluminium doors and windows with traditional building materials has been expertly executed as the homeowners intended.
A beautiful contemporary property that blends wonderfully into the Usk Valley but with modern large format glazing that shows this traditional looking barn building is now a superbly designed and expertly built luxury home.
