Background
The owners of this semi-detached villa in Uddingston on the outskirts of Glasgow wanted to extend their home while adding a modern element that would look completely different to the rest of the house. They commissioned local residential architects Abode to design something really unique and special for their home.
Having worked with us several times, Abode recommended that the homeowners visit our beautiful showroom in Glasgow to explore the various products that we can offer. Once briefed by the homeowners about their preference for sliding doors, Abode designed a complex kitchen extension with two very notable features.
What we delivered
We provided a detailed quotation off-plan and then attended the property to carry an in-depth survey, provide profile samples and agree a construction timeline with the teams on site. Having confirmed all the finer details for how our products would be installed, we then manufactured the bespoke items and returned several weeks later to install our large format glazing.
XP Glide R Moving corner post, pocket sliding door
The XP Glide R is our most premium specification lift and slide door. The lift and slide mechanism makes operating the door almost effortless and the ability to secure the door ajar makes it the perfect product to allow ventilation into a kitchen space.
The thermal performance can meet passive house standards making it ideal for the stringent building regulations across Scotland. Another benefit to the system though is its flexibility, it can be tailored to meet even the most complex of applications, which is why it was the perfection sliding door solution for this project.
Products Used
Throughout the new extension we also supplied a glazed access door for the rear elevation and two flat skylights. The RAL colour used throughout was 9005 Jet Black in our fine textured finished, the remaining specifications are detailed below.
Distinctive architecture
The standout feature within this project is without question the unique combination of a moving corner sliding door that also slides into a cavity pocket. The structure is supported by cantilevered steelwork above and creates a completely open corner as well as a disappearing glass door.
This has been expertly designed by Abode Architects, which they’re rightly proud of ‘it always looks simple in the finished photos, it isn’t. Getting a detail like this to work takes a lot of coordination between structure, glazing and cladding, but when it comes together properly, it is brilliant.’
A dramatic extension
The finished results are as bold as they are unique. The homeowners are delighted with their new open plan kitchen space which flows seamlessly from inside to out. The newly extended home is now bathed in natural light and the dark timber cladding on the exterior creates a striking contrast to the stone-built home. A contemporary extension that has extended and improved the home, while adding significant resale value, a job very well done.
