This steel style derives from the industrial mill buildings of the 1800s, where tall and slim-framed steel doors and windows were combined with high ceilings, creating what is now the template for an industrial interior style.
The look’s renaissance began in the glamourous homes of California, where statement, slender doors are perfectly suited for large apertures and a warm climate. Over time, the coveted look has led to a demand for a similar aesthetic here in the UK.

Thermally broken aluminium
At Express, all our steel style doors are made using thermally broken aluminium. This is because steel-framed doors are very expensive and cold. For these reasons, steel look aluminium doors are a fantastic alternative.
Aluminium boasts the same visual benefits as steel, including slim profiles and the ability to create wide and tall doors and windows, without the same cost or cold temperature.
Get the industrial look
These contemporary, steel effect doors can be achieved through two methods:
Internal Georgian Bars
One method is incorporating black or dark grey Georgian bars inside the glass unit. This relatively simple addition instantly gives the doors the industrial look that has become so popular in today’s home renovations.
Our bi-folding doors are best ordered in RAL 9005 Jet Black to achieve this look, and we can offer the steel style throughout our entire range, including our XP View, XP Vision & XP88.
EXTERNAL ASTRAGAL BARS
Alternatively, we can also create steel style doors by fixing aluminium bars onto the external face of the glass.
This method is quite time-consuming and expensive compared to using black Georgian bars inside the glass, but we do offer this solution for those wanting to create a very authentic industrial feel to their bi-folding doors.

Exactly the same methods can be adopted throughout our window range, with internal Georgian bars or external astragal bars used to create industrial-style windows that give any property a contemporary update.

Fixed Windows
Fixed windows are simple with slim aluminium profiles and glass so adding bars onto the glass is easy and a great way to add character to a room.
Tilt & turn windows
Often floor to ceiling windows, the steel look lends itself to these windows that tilt inwards or swing inwards like a door.
Perfect next to sliding doors
We love the huge glass areas created with our slim sightline sliding doors but if you want to soften the space or ensure it's not overly clinical then steel look windows are the perfect compliment to our large format and slim sightline glazing.
Single doors, French doors & sidelights
The steel look isn't limited to our bi-fold doors, we can offer the same solution in single and French doors, the latter combined with sidelights is very popular in the steel look set up.

What size will my frames be?
Our steel style products are formed using our existing aluminium product range. As such, the nature of the system used will dictate the frame specification and sizes we can offer. Your representative will be able to provide you with these details during the design and quotation process.
Do you offer welded steel doors & windows?
No, our entire product range is manufactured solely from thermally broken aluminium.
How do you achieve an industrial look?
Our steel style products are simply slim-framed aluminium doors and windows in a dark RAL colour (typically 9005 Jet Black) with dark bars within the glass or on top. The double-glazed units are fitted with 18mm or 25mm ‘glazing bars’ to mirror the traditional appearance of the style.
Do you offer a choice of door and window handles?
Your representative will be able to provide you with images of all our door and window furniture. As our steel style bifold doors and windows are almost exclusively requested in a black finish, we can offer matching handles, hinges and gaskets across all our door and window systems.
