The owners of this detached property in Surrey commissioned an architect to design a large double height extension to the rear of their property. The extension was part of a huge renovation that included replacing all the existing windows and doors in the house as well as a large landscape garden design to create a connection between the new extension and the revamped exterior space.
Once the plans were drawn and approved the homeowners visited our beautiful Weybridge showroom to view the products that would ultimately play a key role in their large renovation project. Our Weybridge showroom is a two-floor space packed with entrance doors, windows, skylights, roof lanterns, and our full range of sliding doors. It was the opportunity to view our full product range in real life settings that made choosing the products a stress free and enjoyable process and allowed our surveyor to attend site to accurately measure all the bespoke doors and windows required to transform this home.
We completed the project in phases to suit the construction schedule. Initially we installed the roof lantern and windows to enable the extension to progress. Once all the rubble had been cleared, we then returned four weeks later to install the large sliding doors to make the extension completely watertight. Our final phase of the project was completed around four months later when we installed brand new windows and a front door into the existing house to create a consistent look throughout the whole property.
The rear extension is dominated by large format glazing including three panel and two panel XP Glide patio doors. The XP Glide is our most popular sliding door and it’s easy to see why.
The outer frame is tailored for UK building regulations with a narrow face width which has been partly concealed internally but still looks great externally the profile fully visible between the brickwork openings.
The narrow sightline means that 20 square metres of panoramic glazing are interrupted by just three 20mm vertical transoms, which brings the newly landscaped garden into view and bathes the home in natural light throughout. The new raised patio sits at exactly the same floor level as the house, so the whole space flows inside to out including through the four-metre clear opening created by the large triple track door.
A shaped window completes the glazing across the rear, with the top left corner raked to suit the pitch of the extension, which lines through with the existing traditional house. The type of aesthetic detail that can only be achieved by commissioning a quality architect.
The window sits at the same height and floor level as the sliding doors so looks fantastic from the outside, but it is on the inside where the benefits are truly felt. A huge lightwell that gives the home gym and inside, outside feel.
Our Scenic windows look great in both the new extension and the existing house. The opening sashes sit completely flush against the windows outer frame to give a clean and modern aesthetic.
Internally, the sightlines are so slim that the window handle sits within the glazing bead, the perfect window to follow the theme of the new extension, minimal frames, and maximum glass.
These features combined with superb thermal performance and secured by design accreditation ensures that our windows have upgraded both the look and feel of the property, while also beautifully compliment the large format glazing within the extension.
As part of the large project, we also supplied a new front door and shaped window, a roof lantern, plus various other windows, and doors throughout the house.
The RAL colour used throughout is 7016 Anthracite Grey and the remaining specifications and sizes are detailed below.
The finished results of this project are hugely impressive. The new extension is a huge, open plan dining and living space. The interiors are very much zoned, with the dining table sitting directly in front of the glass doors, which leads down to a games area with a pool table sitting directly under the roof lantern. The games area is part of a snug living area, which sits around the corner but very much feels the benefits of the two-panel sliding door and the large roof lantern.
The home gym sits adjacent, a light filled space thanks to the huge feature window, and central to this new open plan area is the kitchen, which now feels very much the heart of the home.
Sat further back it is the key to the newly extended space and the perfect vantage point to enjoy special family moments as the seasons change and the years’ role by.
Externally, the home looks stunning. A large family home that has retained its traditional charm. The large garden feels secluded and private, with a new landscape that has been designed to complement the leafy surroundings. Natural wood materials lead up a steep bank that connect the garden to the tall trees of the surrounding Surrey woodland and the new extension feels much a part of the garden thanks to the integrated design, the same floor levels from inside to out, the ability to fully open the doors to the garden, and the large format glazing that acts as an almost invisible barrier between the two.
