What Are Double Glazed Windows with Integral Blinds?

Integral blinds are a practical and tidy window solution where the blinds are permanently sealed within a double glazed unit. They can be fitted into most window and door frames and are typically controlled via a magnetic slider positioned at the side of the glass or by remote control, depending on the system you choose. This makes them especially useful for bifold doors, large glazed openings, and rooms where clean lines and simplicity are key.

Managing Director of Express Bi-folding Doors, Steve Bromberg says, “Integral blinds are one of those rare innovations that combine practicality with elegance. They deliver a cleaner, safer, and more energy-efficient solution than traditional blinds, which is why we’ve seen such strong demand from homeowners across the UK.”

How they Work

1) The sealed glass unit

It all starts with a normal double glazed unit constructed of two panes of glass with a spacer bar in between. The edges are carefully sealed to trap insulating gas (usually argon) inside. This keeps your home warmer and reduces outside noise.

2) The blinds sit inside the cavity

Instead of leaving the space empty, a slim venetian or pleated blind is fitted between the two panes. Sealed inside, it is fully protected from dust, dirt, and little fingers.

3) Factory-fresh assembly

Everything is put together in clean factory conditions. This ensures no dust, streaks, or moisture get trapped inside, keeping your blinds spotless from day one. Once sealed, the blind looks just like a normal window, until you start using it.

4) Fitted into a normal window frame

The glass unit is then installed into a standard frame, like aluminium, UPVC or timber, just like any other double glazed window. For best results we highly recommend choosing a thermally broken aluminium frame.

5) Easy operation

Here’s the clever bit: the blinds are operated using a magnetic system. A discreet slider or knob sits on the face of the glass or in the frame. Move it up or down, and the blind inside follows. Turn it, and the slats tilt open or closed. No holes in the glass, and the seal stays airtight.

6) Motorised options

Prefer a bit more luxury? Some models like those from Uni-Blinds come with a tiny built-in motor, powered by a battery or wired connection. These can be controlled with a wall switch, remote, or smart home system, perfect for large windows or patio doors.

Integral Blinds VS Traditional Blinds

1) Energy Efficiency

Research from the University of Salford’s Energy House Labs shows that blinds can cut heat loss through windows by up to 33%. Integral blinds, fitted within double glazed units (especially with thermally broken aluminium frames), help maintain a steady indoor temperature. By sitting inside the glazing, they act as an extra layer of insulation without blocking out natural light. The result? A more energy-efficient home, lower bills, and a smaller carbon footprint.

2) Child & Pet Friendly

Traditional blinds often come with cords, chains or wands which are all potential hazards for children and pets. But with integral blinds these risks are removed entirely, as the mechanism is sealed inside the glass. With no dangling cords or loose parts, the result is a safer, tidier, and worry-free solution for family homes.

3) Aesthetic

If you’re after a clean, uncluttered look, integral blinds are hard to beat. They sit neatly within the window unit itself, keeping sightlines sharp and interiors streamlined. This makes them particularly popular in modern builds and extensions, where they pair beautifully with aluminium bifold or sliding doors. Traditional blinds, by contrast, can sometimes look bulky or interrupt the flow of a sleek interior.

4) Maintenance

One of the biggest advantages of integral blinds is how little upkeep they need. Because they’re sealed inside the glazing, they stay completely protected from dust, dirt, and fingerprints. Cleaning is as simple as wiping down the glass, whereas traditional blinds need regular dusting, wiping, and untangling, which can quickly become a chore.

5) Durability

Durability is one of the clearest differences. As integral blinds are sealed inside the glass, they’re completely protected from knocks, pets and general wear and tear. Traditional blinds, however, are exposed and often show signs of ageing sooner; slats can bend, cords can fray, and mechanisms can fail with regular use.

6) Privacy Control

Both traditional and integral blinds allow you to adjust light and privacy, but the experience feels very different. With integral blinds, you can tilt, raise, or lower them smoothly without cords or fiddly fixings. Whether you’re blocking out street views or adding a touch of shade, the adjustment is effortless, and because they’re enclosed, the mechanism stays dependable over time.
