The owners of this home in Surrey commissioned local architects Goodhall Design to draw up plans to open up the interior of their home, creating an open plan kitchen and dining area and adding a side extension. The plans included structural designs to allow for internal walls to be knocked down, new bi-folding doors to open up the home to the garden and a glass roof to flood natural light into the new extension.
Having worked with us many times the experts at Goodhall Design advised the homeowners to visit our Weybridge showroom where they examined and chose the bespoke products that would bring the architects plans to life.
We liaised with the homeowners, architects and the construction teams on site to ensure that the project ran smoothly from the point of survey, through to manufacture and installation. We provided all the new and bespoke glazing required to create what is now a light filled and open plan home.
The 7m by 2.5 metre extension down the side of the house is a wonderful addition to the home that has transformed the interior space. The extension is essentially a huge wall of glass with a glass lean to roof sitting on a supporting beam with a triple track sliding door underneath.
The supporting beam has been cloaked inside and out with an insulated aluminium pressing that blends the two products into one, creating a distinctive architectural feature that looks stunning from both the inside and out.
The rear elevation contains two sets of bi-folding doors. The slim sightlines of the XP88 system are ideal for the relatively narrow openings and the three panel set up allows for one door that can be used as a regular door, plus the ability to completely open the space.
The doors look great when closed and include solar integral blinds. Internal blinds are a neat and contemporary way to screen the doors, which never need cleaning and offer solar shading, privacy and literally fold away with the door when opened.
The benefits of combining open plan interiors with large format glazing on two elevations is that different parts of the house can be enjoyed at different parts of the day. The external patio wraps around on both sides, so the outdoor BBQ, hot tub and dining area can all feel like an extension of the home once the bi-fold or sliding doors are completely open.
Both the side and rear elevation can be opened up to bask in the sunlight, and the occupants can enjoy the suns warmth in different parts of the home at different parts of the day, or as the case may be, take refuge from it by sitting in the shaded outdoor or indoor areas during the heights of summer.
This is what good design is all about, creating adaptable spaces that can be used and enjoyed at different times of the day throughout the different seasons.
Opening windows have been expertly incorporated into the returns of the pitched roof extension. This has provided another modern detail and integrates one of the windows into the new kitchen as it sits directly above the kitchen sink.
The two windows mirror each other and line through with the pitch of the roof, while the ability to open the windows provides the ventilation needed for the open plan kitchen.
The RAL colour used throughout is 7016 anthracite grey, the remaining sizes and specifications of the products used are detailed below.
This project is a great example of how adding a small amount of space can have a huge impact on the layout and feel of a home.
The new glazed side extension looks great from the outside but spectacular on the inside. The open plan kitchen diner looks superb, bathed in light from all angles and a flexible space that flows between the breakfast bar, to the dining area and outside onto the wrap around patio.
The home feels transformed, modern and inviting, bright and a great example of how coupling excellent products with quality design will create a beautiful home that flows fantastically from the inside and out.
