Background

The owners purchased an idyllic riverside plot some twenty miles South of Glasgow. Their ambition was to demolish the existing property and begin a complete new build to create their dream home. The plans for their home were bold and ambitious with a clear to aim to create a truly distinctive and modern luxury home. The dramatic design led to planning objections & public consultations that resulted in full planning approval with small caveats. One planning provision was that long trees, plants and bushes were planted around the home to ensure that the riverbank and sprawling hills benefited from natural greenery, whilst parts of the home were restricted to ground level only.

After deliberation and some compromise, the plans were finally approved. Armed with the finalised designs the homeowners visited our East Kilbride showroom several times as they looked to appoint the contractor to manufacture and install the huge amounts of bespoke glazing required for their new property.

What we delivered

We offered our expert advice throughout each stage of the project. Slim framed windows with maximum glass areas were a fundamental requirement throughout, so the whole house from front to back benefits from large format picture windows. The gable shaped side of the house contains numerous shaped windows, which ensure that natural light is truly maximised in several of the homes key rooms including the kitchen, living area & entrance way, plus the first floor & master bedroom. Internal plasterwork & external tiles sit against our slim aluminium windows creating minimal sightlines & clean lines throughout the property

Ventilation throughout the home is achieved by two key products. Our Horizon tilt & turn windows, which look like fixed windows but with the option to tilt inwards for ventilation are positioned around the house. The full height windows can tilt inwards or be opened fully by swinging into the property to allow access inside and out. Lift & slide patio doors have been utilised to create the flush transition from inside the property out to the external patio and landscaped gardens. Lift and slide doors were chosen for two reasons, one because their superb weather ratings are ideal for an exposed location such as this. The second is again because of ventilation as the doors can be slid slightly open and then locked into position to allow natural airflow into the property without the worry of doors moving in the wind, children playing around them or an intruder coming in through an ajar door. The XP Infinite doors also boast excellent thermal properties making them the ideal door product for stringent building regulations.

A Feature Entrance

The dramatic feature entrance is very much in keeping with the rest of the property. A large, shaped window & two slim-line sidelights surround a distinctive feature entrance door. The Arola design is from our Premium range of front doors, three glass inserts are separated by woodgrain feature inlays that soften & warm the appearance of the door.

A Fantastic New Home

The exterior of the house mixes different materials including lightweight tiles & cedar cladding, which when combined with our anthracite grey aluminium products & expansive glazing adds to the Grand Designs feel of this unique new build. Inside the contemporary feel flows throughout. The home comprises of modern light filled rooms with floor to ceiling glass at every turn. This is a fantastic project and a great example of how bold design; great products and some planning patience will be more than worth it in the end.
