The owners of this home wanted to make the most of the stunning national park location by carrying out a huge renovation and extension that would transform the house and incorporate large format and floor to ceiling glazing throughout the property. The home itself sits in a valley within Loch Lomond, right on the loch itself in what is one of the most beautiful but also one of the most exposed locations in the UK.
There are high quality timber doors and windows that are suitable for this kind of location, but thin sightlines were important to the homeowners as they wanted to enjoy the amazing outward views throughout the year. Combining thin sightlines with the weather performance required for this type of location meant that aluminium windows and doors were the only viable choice for this particular project, so there was only one place the homeowners seriously considered as their bespoke glazing supplier.
They travelled to our impressive Glasgow showroom to explore our products in detail and discuss their project with our friendly sales team. We liaised with them about the benefits of each of our products and finalised the technical details such as the required IX values for each of our doors and windows to withstand the heavy wind loads in the West coast of Scotland.
The project included knocking down much of the existing house, replacing it with a huge extension that would eventually make the new home unrecognisable.
We surveyed the property as the build progressed and manufactured a bespoke front door, shaped window, sliding doors and various aluminium windows that we later installed throughout the property. We also tailored some of our products specifically for this exposed location, the details of which are stated below.
In exposed and windy locations like this sliding doors are definitely more popular and arguably more practical than bi-folding doors. Our XP Glide system is our most popular sliding door, and it has been utilised perfectly in this project.
The sightline is just 20mm, but we have varied interlock options that we can use based on the wind load requirements of any specific location. In this instance the winds will regularly surpass 100 kilometres an hour, so we bolstered both the internal and external interlocks by increasing the depth of both. This retains the 20mm sightline but makes the central profiles stronger, allowing the homeowners to benefit from floor to ceiling glass doors throughout the home including a dramatic feature in the living area, plus stunning glass doors in the bedrooms and leading out onto the balcony.
The transom within our picture windows is just 48mm wide, so perfect for thin profiles that allow for maximum amounts of natural light while framing the outward views. An additional benefit of this system is that we can reinforce with an internal fin profile that provides a nice looking architectural detail that is available in a variety of depths.
The deeper the fin, the stronger the IX value, which enables us to supply thin picture windows throughout the UK and reinforce as required to ensure homeowners can enjoy beautiful windows designed to withstand the harshest UK weather. In this instance a required IX value of 126 was needed to meet 1900 pascals, which essentially means a fin deep enough to cope with regular winds over 100kph.
We offer a massive range of entrance doors and our XP77 range is a more cost-effective solution that we can offer when compared to our premium and pivot front doors. A high-quality aluminium front door with a range distinctive panels to choose from that are glazed into it. The design picked for this property is the Vigor style, a strong and solid front door with subtle indents to give it a contemporary aesthetic.
Any installation into a waterside location such as this requires marine grade powder coating. This coating is essentially a thicker powder with a higher volume of macrons. We actually offer a high macron powder as standard but in preparation for marine environments we also treat all the mitres and joints with an anti-corrosion coating during production.
Saltwater deposits will attack the joints in the doors and windows so this coating, coupled with the marine grade powder coating will ensure that we can give a project specific paint guarantee to all customers with waterside properties, as was the case with the particular project.
The various products used have all been marine grade powder coated in one of our exclusive finishes Mocha, a light, coffee brown with a premium textured finish.
The sizes and specifications of the rest of the products used throughout the home is detailed below.
This home is now completely unrecognisable following its dramatic transformation and its fair to say that the location is more impressive than our products. A beautiful national park location with a mountain backdrop and amazing waterside views right across the valley.
The true value that we bought to this project was our expertise, we didn’t just supply doors and windows, we provided a fantastic service and invaluable advice. We tailored our products to suit this incredibly unique location, beautiful doors and windows that are fully weather tested and designed to cope with the high winds and harsh weather.
