George Clarke on designing glazing into a property

Lifestyle

We all know and understand that glazing plays a huge role in both the external appearance of a building and perhaps more importantly how it compliments each individual space once inside. To make the most of any property though, it’s not always a case of the more glass, the better.

We caught up with architect and TV presenter George Clarke to ask his expert opinion on what to consider and look out for when designing glazing into a property.

Modern kitchen with a large island, white high-backed chairs, and three artistic pendant lights. Skylights and bespoke glass solutions flood the space with natural light, with an outdoor seating area visible through bifold doors.

Glazing creates different aspects

George states ‘I think any space that’s got a large amount of glass in it, that’s done in a very well designed and controlled way is brilliant. Skylights for example, give a completely different aspect, you’re not looking out but you’re looking up.

It doesn’t matter if you’re in a city environment and looking up at buildings and blue sky or if you’re in the middle of the countryside and you’re looking up and seeing a tree canopy and  birds flying in the sky, it’s a beautiful thing, so for me it’s not just about the amount of glass it’s about having the right glass in the right location’.

Quality over quantity

George continues ‘there’s some buildings I’ve been to where if I’m really honest with you I think there’s too much glass in there. You feel like you’re living in a kind of fish tank and everybody can see you and you’ve got no privacy, so I think it’s about controlled and really good quality design and making sure that the glazing is put in the positions where you really need it. Glass is great for letting in natural light where it really compliments it so it’s not quantity it’s quality when it comes to a design. For me the best buildings, the best pieces of architecture are where there’s the right amount of glass positioned in the right way allowing the right views and the right amount of light in and that’s really good architecture.

Modern two-story house with large windows, light stone exterior, and gray roof, featuring stylish bifold doors and surrounded by landscaped gardens and trees under a cloudy sky.

Get the combinations right

George concludes ‘I think just kind of throwing glass at a project and going look how great it is isn’t necessarily the only way. Good design is about the right amount of solid the right amount of void and the right amount of glass and doing it in a really controlled way and they’re the best architects who pull it off’.

A spacious indoor showroom displays several modern house models with large windows, bespoke glass solutions for front doors, and outdoor patio areas, all under a high ceiling with skylights.
