How to get your home ready for Christmas

Lifestyle

With winter on the horizon and the colder months setting in, there’s never a better time than now to start planning for Christmas in your home – especially if you’re planning on hosting a Christmas party!

Whether that’s setting out how you plan to run the big day, a few quick home renovations, or a full overhaul of your windows and doors, by starting early, you can be sure you have everything ready by the time the festive season rolls around.

Of course, if you’re not sure where to start with any of these renovation tips, then don’t worry, Express has your Christmas planning covered. Keep reading to learn our top 5 tips for how to get your home ready for Christmas!

1. Write up your Christmas checklist

It goes without saying that the more you stay ahead of the Christmas curve, the more likely it is that you’ll stay in control of the decision-making and that everything will go to plan. And that means you need to create a Christmas checklist well in advance, so nothing slips through the cracks.

From making sure each kid gets an even spend on gifts to mapping out your time to ensure you can squeeze in all the fun stuff you want to do in the run-up to Christmas Day, there’s a lot to cover – and that’s before you even consider how to organise the Christmas dinner!

So, if you want to be sure that you’re prepared for the end of the year, start planning for Christmas now.

2. Christmas home improvements

Getting a new sofa or TV is one thing, but if you want to make sure that your home is truly ready for any potential cold spell, then you need to start your renovation plans as soon as possible.

For starters, if improving your home’s insulation is top of your priority, then you can’t go wrong with a new front entrance door or aluminium windows, both of which offer excellent insulative properties.

Of course, if enhancing the view from your home is what you’re after instead, then you might want to invest in a set of sliding doors or bi-folding doors. Equally good at heat retention as our windows, our patio doors are the perfect choice for those who want to admire their snow-covered garden from the comfort of their lounge or kitchen.

Finally, if an entirely new home extension is what you’re after, then you need to think about starting it pronto. The last thing you want is for your home to be exposed to the elements over December and January.

3. Christmas decluttering

While it’s traditional to declutter your home with a spring clean, there’s no reason you can’t start your Christmas preparation by clearing out all of your old clothes and sorting your spare room in time for any potential guests to stay over.

In fact, now is the time to reorganise and remove all those unnecessary and unwanted belongings from every room of your house. The kitchen, lounge, hallway, porch, bedroom, nowhere should be left untouched by your hand as you tidy up your space.

And just because you’re getting rid of all your old stuff, that doesn’t mean you have to bin it. Instead, give whatever you don’t need to your local charities, so they go to those who need it. It is the gift of giving after all.

Lastly, as a bonus tip, why not take the opportunity of your sorting to do a deep clean of your home as well? That way, you can be sure every inch of your home is sparkling clean for the holidays.

4. Christmas outdoor decoration

Naturally, no Christmas planning would be finished without a few outdoor festive decorations to complete the look of your home. However, this in no way means that you have to go overboard with blinding lights and big plastic figures.

Instead, for a more tasteful approach, all you really need to buy is a festive wreath, some gentle lighting, and some extra greenery for your front step. Simply hang your wreath on your door, add some personal touches, and then hang the lights above and around your doorway in a welcoming fashion, creating a warm entryway to your home.

As an aside, if you do have a large garden with bushes and hedgerows, then now is the perfect opportunity to let your creative side out and go wild with the topiary. Whether that means adding a festive touch to the hedge or going all out on new designs, that’s up to you, but it’s sure to catch the eye of any guests you have over.

5. Last-minute Christmas DIY

Finally, the run-up to Christmas is the ideal time to squeeze in all those little DIY jobs that have been nagging at the back of your mind since the start of the year, so be sure to add them to your Christmas checklist and grab your toolbox.

Wobbly shelves, stiff doors, broken cupboards, now is the time to fix all of these irritating but non-pressing issues with your home. That way, you’ll prevent them from becoming a bigger issue in the future and get the satisfaction of freshening up the interior of your house.

And there you have it – those are our top tips for preparing your home for the Christmas season. Of course, if you’ve been reading this and become interested in investing in some new home features, then get in touch with the Express team today.
